Monique Prieto was born in 1962 in Los Angeles, California. She studied art, earning both her B.F.A. and M.F.A. at the University of California, Los Angeles and California Institute of the Arts. As a painter and printmaker, Prieto works in a primarily abstract style. The influence of artists including Ellsworth Kelly and Andy Warhol is apparent in her compositions which incorporate a variety of shapes and color.

In her abstract style, each of Prieto’s prints and paintings tells a specific story. She incorporates narratives that are not easily interpreted by simple formal analysis. Prieto welcomes viewers to interpret the work on their own and appreciates the variety of interpretations. Additionally, Prieto has worked in a figurative style, depicting landscapes and human silhouettes. These works differ dramatically from her more colorful and abstract works, yet continue to represent Prieto’s interest in line and shape.

Her work is included in numerous public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas; The Latino Museum in Los Angeles, California; Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, California; Kresge Art Museum at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan; and the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach, California.
